Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
