The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
